W61.62XD is 'Struck by duck, subsequent encounter.' Read that last part again: subsequent. This code does not exist because someone got hit by a duck. It exists because someone got hit by a duck and then came back for follow-up care. The joke gets the click, but the code is a perfect teaching specimen: seven characters, a placeholder in the sixth position that means nothing at all, and a final character that decides whether the claim is describing an emergency or a wound check three weeks later. Get that last character wrong and you have not made a typo - you have told the payer a different story.
